My Journey in Nursing: A Commitment to Mental Health and Advocacy

My career in nursing, spanning over two decades, isn't just a list of accomplishments; it's a living testament to a profound commitment to patient well-being, an unyielding drive for continuous learning, and a fierce passion for shattering the stigma surrounding mental health. I've seen firsthand the gaps in our healthcare system, and I've dedicated my life to bridging them.
My journey began in 1997. As a nursing assistant with the Victoria Order of Nurses, I provided compassionate home care. It was there I learned that proper care goes beyond medical charts; it's about connecting with people in their most vulnerable moments. After graduating with honors as a Registered Nurse from Humber College in Canada in 2000, I continued this dedication, rejoining the Victoria Order of Nurses for critical home care and vaccination efforts. I even expanded my reach into public health, literally going into schools in the Region of Peel to vaccinate children, ensuring their future health from a young age.

For 23 incredible years, my focus was deeply rooted in women's health. I walked alongside countless women and families through some of their most intimate and challenging moments. From the anxieties of antepartum care to the joys of postpartum recovery, the intense reality of labor and delivery, and the delicate environment of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), I witnessed the profound physical and emotional transitions they navigated. This extensive experience wasn't just about applying medical knowledge; it was about truly understanding the human experience of birth and new parenthood. I honed my foundational nursing skills in these critical areas, further specializing with an Obstetric Certificate from Humber College in 2002. This early immersion in maternal and family health laid the crucial groundwork for understanding the complexities of patient care across the entire lifespan. My pursuit of knowledge continued with a Bachelor's degree from Chamberlain College, which solidified my theoretical understanding and prepared me for advanced practice.
Before becoming an FNP, I also spent time in the emergency room. This was where I truly saw the raw, unfiltered reality of healthcare and, more specifically, the desperate, unaddressed need for mental health care. The ER often felt like a revolving door for people in crisis, and it became painfully clear that we were missing a crucial piece of the puzzle: dedicated mental health providers. This direct exposure to the mental health crisis in acute care settings didn't just influence my professional trajectory; it fundamentally shifted it.

The desire to provide truly comprehensive, holistic care led me to become a Family Nurse Practitioner, graduating from Barry University in 2022. As an FNP in primary care, I gained invaluable experience working with diverse populations. I was deeply involved in HIV care, managing clients and contributing to both the PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) and PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) programs. I also provided essential STI testing and treatment. What truly resonated with me was extending these services to the homeless population, ensuring they received critical STI testing and access to prophylactic HIV treatment like PrEP. This role allowed me to integrate primary care principles with a deeper understanding of the complex social determinants of health. However, the insights from the emergency room, coupled with ongoing observations in primary care, only solidified my conviction: there was a significant gap in mental healthcare access and a pervasive, damaging stigma surrounding mental illness. This stark reality fueled my most recent academic endeavor: a Post-Master's Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) Certificate from Florida State University in 2024.

Today, I am a dually board-certified APRN, holding certifications as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) from the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) and as both an FNP and PMHNP from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). These certifications aren't just accolades; they represent my unwavering commitment to upholding the highest standards of professional competence and reflect the broad, integrated scope of my practice.

My most significant achievement to date is the founding and leadership of HC Mental Health & Wellness Telepsych NP (https://www.hctelepsychnp.com/). As CEO and founder, I've built a platform that directly addresses critical mental health needs, particularly for those in underserved areas, by providing accessible telepsychiatry services. This isn't just a business venture; it's a direct response to the mental health crisis I've witnessed throughout my career, and a tangible embodiment of my commitment to accessible, compassionate care.
Beyond direct patient care, I am a fierce advocate for mental health awareness. My website serves as a vital educational resource, featuring blogs that inform the community about mental health topics and actively work to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness. I also leverage my personal experiences with dyslexia, ADHD, and menopause to connect with and empower others, demonstrating the profound importance of lived experience in fostering accurate patient understanding and empathy. It's about showing people they're not alone.

My commitment extends to active engagement within professional and community organizations. I am a proud member of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA), the Florida Association of Nurse Practitioners (FLANP), and NPI Network Professionals International. I also serve as a professional provider for Postpartum Support International, further showcasing my dedication to specialized mental health support. My involvement with the Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Association (CHADD), both as a member and a volunteer, highlights my ongoing efforts to support individuals with neurodevelopmental differences. Furthermore, I consistently support organizations like the Children’s Home Society of Florida, recognizing the critical link between social well-being and mental health.
My career has been defined by a relentless pursuit of excellence, a deep, personal commitment to my patients, and an unshakeable desire to make a lasting, positive impact on community health. It's a journey driven by purpose, and I'm ready for what's next.
